Artist's Biography Associate Professor of Music at The University at Buffalo (UB), Jon Nelson maintains an active career as performer, producer and collaborator. He is a founding member of the internationally recognized Meridian Arts Ensemble, and has collaborated with numerous composers including Natalie Merchant, Marisa Monte, Duran Duran, Arto Lindsay, Milton Babbitt, and Frank Zappa.
Jon began teaching at UB in 1998, as Director of the UB Concert Band, and Teacher of Trumpet. He has created new performance opportunities for UB students including the Genkin Philharmonic, the Pan Am Ensemble, UB Ragtime Ensemble, and The Raymond Scott Project. As a teacher of Musicianship, he also teaches ear training, conducting, arranging, orchestration, and guides students toward developing new repertoire and ensembles. He has produced five solo CD recordings at UB that have brought together internationally recognized performers, and has also invited improvising composer/performers to UB to work with students including Tom Pierson, Bobby Previte, Kirk Nurock, and Elliott Sharp.
Active in the field of education, he has performed and taught at the Tanglewood Music Center, Oaxaca (Mexico) Instrumenta, Lieksa Brass Week, Meridian Seminar@ECU, Bar Harbor Brass Week, Wellesley Composers Conference, Atlantic Brass Seminar, June in Buffalo, and the Festival Centro Historico in Mexico City. He has also presented master classes in the US, Holland, Germany, Belgium, Taiwan, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Costa Rica, and Australia, and has served on the faculties at Princeton University, Boston University, Hartt College, and Middlebury College.
Jon Nelson holds a B.M. from The Juilliard School where he studied with
Mark Gould. He also studied with Antoine Cure in France, and Laurie Frink in New York.
