Artist's Biography
Dr. Timothy Meyer Altman is chair of the music department at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He is also the Director of Bands, teaches conducting, instrumental music education courses, trumpet, and is the advisor of the collegiate MENC chapter. He has taught instrumental and general music at the elementary, middle school, high school, and university level in Virginia, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and North Carolina. As band director at Varina High School in Richmond, Virginia, the band was a "Virginia Honor Band" with superior ratings in Marching, Concert, and Jazz. In 2005, the UNCP Wind Ensemble performed at a General Session of the North Carolina Music Eductors Association conference under his direction with guest conductors Robert W. Smith and Jay Bocook. Dr. Altman commissioned premieres by Eric Ewazen and James Sochinski for that performance. In November 2008, the UNCP Wind Ensemble will again perform at NCMEA with guest conductor Samuel Hazo. Altman completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trumpet performance at the University of Kentucky. He also holds degrees from Virginia Tech, and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His trumpet students have been state/regional winners and national finalists for the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior and Junior Brass Competitions. Dr. Altman is an active conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and trumpet performer. He has performed with numerous orchestras, concert bands, brass bands, and jazz ensembles across the country and at international conferences (Midwest, International Trumpet Guild, etc.). He performed a recital at the Royal College of Music in London in 2005 and performed in Amman, Jordan in May, 2008. He is presently the principal trumpet for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Allen Vizzutti, Doc Severinsen, Bruce Hornsby, Al Jarreau, David Sanborn, and many more international artists.
