Artist's Biography
Joo Mogo (Carviais, Portugal 1983) began his musical career in a local wind orchestra; at the age of fourteen, he began studying at the Mirandela Professional School of Arts with Maciel Matos. Two years later, he commenced studies in the Espinho Professional Music School where he studied under Jorge Almeida until graduating in 2002.

In 2002, Joo attended the Portuguese National Orchestral Academy (ANSO), under the direction of David Burt, Rui Mirra and Srgio Charrinho. Two years later, he received a scholarship from the College Swanston Fund to study at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM, Manchester, UK). There, Joo studied under the direction of John Miller and Murray Greig, inspiring him to pursue an orchestral career. Through the RNCM, he performed with all the major ensembles of the college (RNCM Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Brass Band, Opera Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, New Ensemble), as well as performing the world premire of Matthew Sergeant\'s solo work for Trumpet and Brass Band at the RNCM Brass Festival in 2007.

In 2007, Joo was appointed as principal trumpet in the Espinho Classical Orchestra. In the same year, he concluded his degree in Manchester and was awarded a scholarship by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow to continue his studies with John Wallace, Mark OKeefe and Peter Franks, obtaining a postgraduate diploma in 2008 with high marks. In Scotland, he performed with numerous RSAMD ensembles (Symphony Orchestra, Academy Brass) and was chosen to perform Vivaldi\'s Concerto for Two Trumpets as a soloist with the RSAMD Chamber Orchestra.

Joo has performed with professional orchestras worldwide and other internationally renowned ensembles, including: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North, Orquestra Sinfnica Portuguesa, Orquestra Sinfnica do Porto Casa da Msica, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra do Algarve, Orquestra Clssica da Madeira, Orquestra da Extremadura (Badajoz), and Quinteto de Metais do Seixal. He has also performed alongside several high-profile youth orchestras, including: Orquestra Aproarte, Orquestra Nacional de Sopros dos Templrios, Orquestra Portuguesa das Escolas de Msica, and the International Orchestra of Aberdeen Youth Festival.

During his orchestral career, Joo has worked under the baton of many renowned conductors, such as Vassily Sinaisky, Ilan Volkov, Gianandrea Noseda, Takuo Yuasa, Stephane Deneve, Andris Nelsons, Elgar Howarth, Martin Andr, Ernst Schelle, Patrick Lange, Marc Tardue, Roland Kieft, Baldur Bronnimann, Philippe Bach, Jean-Marc Burfin, Cesrio Costa, Brian Shembri, Alvaro Cassuto and Pedro Neves. He has also participated in master-classes with renowned soloists and orchestral musicians, such as Hkan Hardenberger, Jan Frederick Christiansen, Allen Vizzutti, Philip Smith, Thomas Stevens, Matthias Hfs, Michael Sachs, Alison Balsom, Markus Stockhausen and Canadian Brass.

As a chamber musician, Joo has performed with the Portuguese Trumpet Ensemble, most notably at the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) in Denver, Colorado and Glassboro, New Jersey (USA) in 2004 and 2006. In addition to this, he was a member of the Skyline Brass Quintet, who won the highly-coveted Philip Jones Brass Prize in 2007 and were semi-finalists in the Royal Overseas League Chamber Music Competition. The Skyline Brass Quintet also performed many chamber recitals across the UK and Italy, including a date at the prestigious St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London.

Currently, Joo is a tutor of Trumpet and Chamber Music at Conservatrio Regional do Algarve Maria Campina and the Escola das Artes de Sines. In 2008, he was appointed co-principal trumpet of the Orquestra do Algarve, and has been acting principal trumpet since 2011.

Joo is a Vicent Bach Artist and performs on Artisan Bach trumpets.
